Litter Cafe at The House of Objects!
by Busola Afolabi on February 24, 2016
On Saturday 6th February we took a group of children to the ‘House of Objects’ which is based at The Rising Sun Countryside Centre on Whitley Road in Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne. This new and inventive project is dedicated to supporting innovation and developing creative skills in education and aims to encourage the productive use of waste materials.
We booked a 2-hour session on the Saturday for the children to have lots of arty fun and to explore recycling and experiment with the resourcefulness of objects they would normally throw away. They had the opportunity to play around with the items and turn waste into materials to make furniture such as tables and chairs!
The children continued with their creations on Monday at the Millin Centre and really enjoyed themselves during these sessions as it was great for them to engage in something different and also very educational about our environment and the importance of recycling.
All of this was leading up to the grand opening of the ‘Litter Café’ at the ‘House of Objects’ on Friday 19th February! Finishing touches were made to the café and the children’s creations between 10:30am – 12pm ready for the ‘Show and Tell’ session when parents came in to enjoy some refreshments and look at all of the brilliant art work!
